Almost any National Grid customer can sign up, including those who have signed up for renewable energy with an Energy Service Company (ESCO) such as Clean Choice Energy, Ambit, Veridian, etc.

You may not be eligible if:

  • You currently utilize solar panels on your home or property
  • Some large-scale commercial customers also might not be eligible. Get in touch and we’ll be glad to help.

No, you will not incur any additional cost as a Northern Power & Light customer. Your total expense will be exactly the same as your current service, whether you get your energy supply from National Grid or another Energy Service Company.

Northern Power & Light's platform operates in a similar way to a farmers' market, where producers sell directly to customers. This way, producers earn a better rate for the power they generate without having to raise prices.

Why is this important? Renewable energy producers are not able to make energy as cheaply as the majority of energy producers using fossil fuels. In fact, many local renewable producers risk shuttering due to the low wholesale rate the market sets, while many more risk not being built in the first place.

Similar to other “sharing economy” solutions – such as those that enable you to book a stay in someone’s home or get a lift somewhere – NP&L helps make this connection possible. We coordinate with the utility, manage billing, perform customer service, and do everything else we can to ensure that customers have a meaningful and direct connection with renewable energy producers in their own back yard.

Since electricity gets pooled in the grid – the infrastructure that facilitates delivery to your home - what you use does not come from a single source. But as a customer, you have the ability to choose who you contract with for putting that electricity into the grid in the first place. This is true whether you go with the default provider, or if you choose renewable energy from an Energy Service Company.

Northern Power & Light customers are unique: they contract directly with a specific renewable energy producer in their community.

New York’s new Community Distributed Generation (CDG) program enables us to connect you with local renewable electricity. Part of a broader initiative to source most of the State's power from renewable sources by 2030, the CDG program is designed to foster a direct relationship between smaller renewable energy facilities and the communities they serve. It's the same framework that supports Community Solar projects.

Becoming a Northern Power & Light customer will not change your current price structure with the Utility or other Energy Service Company.

As a Northern Power & Light customer, energy generated for you by your local producer is adjusted off your monthly Utility Bill. Northern Power & Light bills you only this amount, so there is no net change in your overall expense.

You will still receive a bill from National Grid, but it will look a lot different. That's because electricity produced for you by the facility you sign up with will be adjusted off your bill. This is reflected as a "Transfer Credit" in your billing detail.

While Northern Power & Light does not offer paper billing as a standard practice, we do make exceptions for individuals and institutions that want to participate but require a paper bill in order to do so.

To inquire about paper billing, send us an email!

We understand that as our customer you are paying two electric bills instead of one. Auto-Pay helps make paying this second bill more convenient.

Auto-Pay also enables our producers, many of which are small businesses, to have predictable revenue.

You can enroll in Auto-Pay when you sign up.

If you’re already signed up and want to switch to Auto-Pay, simply give us a call and someone will be happy to assist you.

While there is no fee for ACH / e-Check payments, Northern Power & Light passes on a processing cost of 2.9% on Credit Card transactions.

Our mission is to make the renewable energy business profitable for producers without raising the price for energy on consumers. Credit Cards are convenient, but they are also expensive. Passing on the cost of processing is how we have decided to offer this payment method without trimming away at these important margins.

If you would like to add another utility account, or don’t see what you’re looking for, give us a call and someone will be happy to assist you.

Northern Power & Light customers can cancel any time and there is never any risk of service interruption.

We ask for 60 days notice so we can reallocate electricity from your producer to other customers. Cancellations made without 60 days notice are subject to a fee equal to roughly one month’s bill.

To cancel, send us an email or call (518) 293-4075

If your new address has electricity service with the same utility, your service with Northern Power & Light can be transferred as well.

Send us an email with your new service address. If there is any change to your billing address, be sure to include this information as well.
